Licence Condition
The licensee must investigate and provide a detailed report on options to better manage backwash discharges associated with the water softening plant.  The report should include but not necessarily be limited to: a full analysis of all potential pollutants within the backwash water, such as total metals, dissolved metals, fluoride, pH, electrical conductivity, total suspended solids, total disolved solids, alkalinity, major cations and anions and bicarbonates; annual volume and average daily backwash discharges; a description of the backwash process and chemicals used in the water softening plant.  This should include all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the chemicals used; results and interpretation of any sediment sampling taken in Lake Liddell, including in the vicinity of the  backwash discharge pipe; indentify the most appropriate option(s) to treat, manage and/or prevent the discharge of pollutants in the backwash to Lake Liddell; provide an implementation timetable for the preferred option(s) identified in 5 above; and provide approximate costings for the implementation of the preferred option(s) identified in 5 above. The report detailing the investigation and recommendations must be provided to the EPA's Regional Manager - Hunter, PO Box 488G Newcastle NSW 23000 by THURSDAY 31 JANUARY 2014.
